Dental imaging ( most commonly X rays) are an important part of equine dental care. Xrays allow the practitioner to assess parts of the tooth not visible during an oral exam as well as the support structures of the teeth. The bones of the skull can be assessed and the sinuses visualised.

The horse has two paired sinuses in their head the frontal sinus and the maxillary sinus. These are air filled spaces and in a younger horse the roots of several upper cheek teeth will be located within this space. Conditions such as fractures of these teeth, tooth root abscess, infection of the sinus (sinusitis) and the presence of growths such as tumours can all be detected with dental imaging.
